Karnataka is a powerhouse of mulberry silk production, yielding around 9,000 metric tons annually, which makes up almost 45% of India’s total mulberry silk output. The majority of this silk is cultivated in the Mysore district, where the legacy of Mysore silk began. The Mysore Silk factory, established in 1912 by Maharaja Sri Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, was originally set up to produce silk fabrics exclusively for the royal family, as well as ornamental garments for the armed forces.
