World’s Most Expensive Textile – Mysore Silk from Mysore

Mysore Crepe Silk, also known simply as Mysore Silk, holds an esteemed place in Karnataka’s cultural heritage. Celebrated for its rich quality and distinctive sheen, it represents centuries of skilled craftsmanship.

When fused with Karnataka’s intricate weaving traditions and adorned with pure gold zari, these fabrics transform into garments that embody timeless elegance and unmatched craftsmanship, creating pieces that are truly unique.

Karnataka is a powerhouse of mulberry silk production, yielding around 9,000 metric tons annually, which accounts for nearly 45% of India’s total mulberry silk output. The majority of this silk comes from the Mysore district — the birthplace of the Mysore Silk legacy.

The Mysore Silk Factory, established in 1912 by Maharaja Sri Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar, was initially founded to produce silk garments exclusively for the royal family and ornamental wear for the armed forces.

The Mysore silk saree, a symbol of royal heritage, stands out for its unmistakable lustre, silky softness, and effortless maintenance. Crafted from pure mulberry silk, it retains its sheen and durability for decades, making it a luxurious, sustainable, and timeless treasure.
